Two years after the fires that devastated Fort McMurray and the rebuilding continues.
The fires of May of 2016 destroyed over 2,000 homes and businesses and forced the evacuation of some 80,000 people.
Wood Buffalo Regional Municipal Councillor, Keith McGrath says the city is still working on rebuilding and healing. He says some 550 homeowners are back in their homes and a total of 1,000 homeowners will be back in their homes by the end of the year. The city is continuing to work with the Canadian Red Cross and other organizations to help with mental health issues.
McGrath, a native of Torbay who has been in Fort McMurray for three decades, says for those who have rebuilt and moved into new homes, still have emotional challenges to face, including the realization that they’ve lost family heirlooms which can have a serious emotional impact.
That’s why they have made sure to have mental health supports in place says McGrath.
